Feedback – project 8

CR- much more meat now and the review is starting to make sense and take form. You are being conceptual with deeper meanings for example, looking at the liminal space,  how the spaces (above and below) co-exists, how the spaces contest one another.

The conclusion is summarised well and brings together gathered research.

Practical work–

Water collaboration- both you and Vicky have co-existed together in this work. There is a unity, a tandem of the two bodies moving and drifting in the water but also the contrast between the spiritual and secular interpretations of the wings. As you have reflected, there is a tension between functionality and symbolism.

The place of the shorter ‘journey’ video is ethereal and sentimental. However, one slide was text heavy and we decided to split it into two shots.  The sound is more discreet and complimentary in this version of the video.

The videos created in P7 are much more enticing now. We can see the vista and vastness of where the body of water exists. The videos feel more immersive. Also, we can see the ‘above’ (the sky) and the ‘below’ (the water). There is also better documentation of your preparation for the action of immersion in the water.

Ideas for P9- make more samples with fabric, but being more organic with the tears and rips. Take footage of the samples floating in the air, flying, drone work and in the below- sunken in the water. At the moment, you have the work floating on the water for immersion and flying above and below would show further experimentation.

Tutor feedback on Learning Outcomes

  • Independently organise, manage, and sustain your own creative practice and the delivery of outcomes in response to Identified opportunities

This has been identified in the continuous work with ‘Above and Below’ where you have made more immersive videos. This has been done independently and there is more individuality in the exploration of the body, materiality, land and water.

  • Independently engage in the creation and development of your personal practice and professional identity

Collaborative work has been extended with another student. There are contexts and ambition which plays with the development of your work.

  • Synthesise contemporary theories, histories, ideas, debates, and practices alongside visual, technical, communication and contextual practices relevant to your individual illustration practice.

This will come through in your critical review. However, as you have two more projects left, double check that you have engaged in research which connects to your practice. For example, relationships got Above and Below.

  • Effectively communicate outcomes and ideas to a range of identified audiences.

Can you identify an audience, who can be noticed by your work, who can appeal too. Consider your collaboration. There are two different concepts, one being quite spiritual and the other being quite humanists and secular. Who do you have in mind when thinking about the wider concepts?

Action points

  • Extend your CR now especially with gathering evidence, answering your questions already laid out. Also, compare and contrast each artist as you go along.
  • Work on some smaller samples and experiments for P9.
  • We discussed getting potential work ready for assessment which we can go through together.

Student notes

Critical review. Much more substance now and it’s coming together in a more coherent read. Explain more in the introduction about what Above and Below is and use images, probably the Collagraph’s here. Bring the artists together more within the research.

Collaboration project with Vicky.

The second video was favoured, two friends, two artists and two women. Something quite ethereal and romantic about it. The video was well considered with a thoughtful pace and strong documentation throughout. The angel wings looked great and added to the beautiful, floaty feel of the film. Showing the vast body of water made such a difference, enhancing the overall sense of scale and atmosphere.

Just a note to split the text over two slides and maybe add a little more sound.

Do we have an audience? Is there someone we could connect too? Someone we could entice. I will ask Vicky how she feels about me sharing the video on the emergency flooding WhatsApp group.

What do our videos communicate, one is quite secular and one quite spiritual, this physical connection with the land.

Project 7 – The photographs are much better as you can see the vista more clearly. Above and Below and the liminal space in between is visually much clearer.

Project 6 – peer review marked and completed.

Moving forward for project 9, I have thought about what I have achieved and how I can make one final project. I still haven’t managed to use the drone because of the weather. I am thinking about a piece that I could suspend on clear twine just Above the surface, so it looks like it floating, in the liminal space. Using much smaller pieces of coloured fabric in organic unstructured shapes. I shall try to tie it to the pontoon and a plant/reed. Hopefully the weather will be kind.

Project 10, start a presentation and lay everything out that I have done, I requested to use my blog. Start with the collagraph’s of Above and Below and the progressive journey that happened after, probably the biggest change was for me to work with unbleached raw cotton, a new medium for me.

More contextual research for supporting work

I have over this unit achieved many collaborative projects with students and alumni, these should be added as a separate blog post.

We talked about the silent crits and as OCA are in discussion over the format of these we agreed as the student led groups were going well I should continue.
