We are Unlimited or Unlimited are a major player within the contemporary art world, especially around disability arts and inclusion. Unlimited is more than a fundraiser, it is a huge support network providing commissions and grants to disabled artists and organisations awarding millions in funding.
The range of work is multi disciplinary, from theatre, visual arts as well as film, music and literature. A hugely valuable resource enabling work that may not have otherwise existed.
Not just artists but curators and producers, offering advice and tools to help with marketing and working internationally to provide funding for supporting inclusive practices. Working towards shifting the industry standards, improving accessibility and programming disabled artists. By acting as an bridge to the wider cultural sector.
The Unlimited Festival, which originated at South Bank helps artists reach larger audiences and critics, resulting in a recognised cultural output for funded work. Rather than just including disabled artists, Unlimited centres them and reshapes the system around them. Many of the staff and trustees are disabled and have access needs which in turn means that decisions are informed by lived experience and assumptions.
The focus is on a whole systematic change, not just a singular project and to keep commissioning the work until the whole cultural sector is transformed, supporting individuals along with the promotion of equality and diversity and promote the elimination of discrimination and invest in cultural change.
People United is more about kindness, care and the involvement of the community by using art as a tool for social change.
Whilst we as artists are encouraged to focus on our creativity, People United describe themselves to “Grow kind, caring and engaged communities”.
Using projects to explore how art can change people and the way they treat each other by addressing topics of inequality, injustice and helping individuals challenge power structures.
The art is expressed in a way to reimagine society not just reflect it. The projects are co created with communities over long periods of time focusing on trust building and forming local relationships, encouraging communities to share ‘power’ with them.
Along with the encouragement of art practice and academic research there is focusing on social experimentation, empathy, compassion and social connections. Building relationships to try and change behaviors to strengthen communities. Bringing together residents, schools and artists to use multiple art forms, film, sound and installations to explore human values. Artwork often being used as a means not an end.
People United have strong ethical and political positioning, centering on diversity, justice, climate awareness, inclusion and oppression practices.
