Kutug Ataman.

Soil (2000)
Cacophony (1999) and Soil (2000)
Both these pieces explore the complexities of our modern society. Particularly noise, creating a chaotic, fast pace society, which can lead to the alienation of our identity and experiences. This chaotic existence as individuals, can derail us and we may loose our connection with where we are supposed to be.
Cacophony is made up of a series of immersive videos, along side these, is a disconnected barrage of noise, which is meant to be disorienting, but at the same time, representing the psychological and emotional disruption that sits alongside our modern existence, as we try to maintain our true selves.
For some, the real noise is too much, evoking feelings of isolation. How do we navigate ourselves through this? And retain our identities through this fractured social society.
Soil explores our personal narratives, to the soil, where roots are formed, connecting us to the earth and grounding us.
Both pieces are about our human experiences, what we encounter everyday, the psychological chaos that surrounds our daily life.
Ataman’s multi layered work invites the viewer to have their own experience, from the extensive imagery and surrounding noise, to enable us to navigate our own relationship with nature as well as our relationship with society. This chaotic, contemporary existence and our deep connections with our heritage.

My tutor suggested researching this French artist to learn about his Living Systems. When I started my research, some of the images I found disturbing, particularly of his dog. I wont pursue this.
